In my journey to become a developer I stumbled upon a type of technology that has us scratching our heads; AI.
The title might be somewhat confusing if you’ve never used ChatGPT for anything other than miscellaneous facts, but it is a question that anyone who programs or manipulates software has at the back of their minds. See, AI has grown increasingly smart in recent years. In fact, it’s grown so smart that it is already able to take humans out of the equation in multiple fields. Naturally, a piece of software like AI is going to feel just at home learning how to use programs like itself, right? Well… The answer is a bit more complex than that, and it’s precisely what we’ll cover in this post.
From where I’m standing it seems inevitable that we’ll have AI taking care of a large portion of our job as web developers. Why would I spend 4-5 hours writing code when I could cut that time in half with the help of artificial intelligence? Now I don’t consider it being at the point of completely replacing us quite yet; it still requires you to know your stuff to really take advantage of it, and this fortunately still makes us somewhat useful. However, I wouldn’t keep my hopes up long term. The reality is in 10-15 years AI will become commonplace and much more advanced than it is now, so the conclusion is simple; we need to be prepared.
What do I mean by this? Start your research, get familiar with AI and how it can assist your workflow. If you’re so inclined, maybe get a certification or look up a course in AI. If/when the winds start changing, you could potentially branch out into web-focused AI tools and keep yourself relevant during an uncertain landscape for the tech industry at large.
I’ll leave a video embedded into the post that I found interesting about the topic below, because why not? Who doesn’t love some existential dread?
