Choosing the right theme for your website is no joke. Do you want to select a default theme, maybe pay a price for a more premium one? Or do you want to create your own from scratch, making the website more unique at the price of time? Not only that, but you also have to choose something you know goes with your brand and product. You can find one you absolutely adore, but if you’re trying to sell to burly motorcycle guys you can’t just make your site look like it’s for ballerinas.
“Choosing the right theme is like finding the perfect outfit for your brand. It should be comfortable, stylish, and fit the occasion.” — Steve Krug
From personal experience I kind of just jumped into the whole thing, no helmet, nothing. I made my own website for my business and whenever I had a question I would go online and look for the answer. How accessible the answers usually are makes the learning curve much smoother than it would have been if I had chosen a CMS with a smaller community. How is this related? Well, I’d apply that same logic to themes. If you aren’t sure how it’s going to react to certain widgets you’re interested in, or how it behaves as WordPress updated, there’s a solid chance someone has gone through it and posted their opinion out there. It’s especially useful to see reviews when you’re paying for them!
Astra for example is a plugin that carries a variety of different ones for a price!
Which leads me to another two considerations I mentioned earlier; price and time. If you want to do something elaborate or particular, you’ll need to go custom. Even if you know what you’re doing, that will cost you either time, or money in someone using theirs. A good middle ground is pre-made themes that allow for ample customization options. They cost a little bit, but save you enough time and give you wiggle room for creativity. Of course, you could always just get a free theme and wing it if you maybe don’t need a lot of functionality and are starting out.
Anyway, that’s what I learned! Hope this showcases at least a bit of knowledge I’ve managed to grasp from college.
Below, I’ll leave a video of how to choose a WordPress theme as well as a picture of a product to use as a reference to practice selecting an appropriate one.
