Selecting a good theme is important for your WordPress site. It will be a big part of your websites style. When considering a theme, you should consider how you want your site to come across to the user. Is this a professional site? Do you want your site to come across as more whimsical or maybe you want it to look more modern. WordPress offers thousands of themes so whatever it is you plan for your site, there’s probably a theme for you.
While there are a lot of themes to choose from, your choice is not just an ascetic one. You should also look to see if the theme has the features, you are looking for. Do you need sidebars, specialty widgets, or maybe you want to have more control of the color scheme. These are all important questions to ask because different themes will have different capabilities. Some themes won’t have sidebars, and some have widgets that others don’t. Colors is something I found to be an important element to deciding what theme to use. Some themes only allow you to pick a color or two and others allow for a wide range of different colors. Different themes have different levels of customization, and it might take some tinkering to get the site to look just like you want.
If you are a visual learner, there are plenty of videos on YouTube to help you on your way. HostGator has a “Working with WordPress” series that has a lot of tips and tricks to building a great WordPress site. Here is the the first episode of the series showing how to choose and install a WordPress theme.
I know this can all seem a little overwhelming. What if you choose the wrong theme or find out you don’t like the one you chose? Well, there’s good news, not only can WordPress themes be previewed before being published but they are also easy to download and switch between themes. Don’t be afraid to download a theme and experiment! If you want to get other peoples opinions there are plenty of groups on social media, for example there is a WordPress subreddit dedicated to all things WordPress. Here is a post with a discussion about how to choose a WordPress theme.
