When Should I Repot my Orchid?

Knowing when to repot an orchid depends on several factors, such as the type of orchid, the size of the pot, and the growth pattern of the plant. Here are some general guidelines:

  1. After Blooming: Many orchids benefit from repotting after they have finished flowering. This is often a good time because the plant is entering a period of active growth.
  2. Every 1-2 Years: Most orchids should be repotted every 1-2 years to refresh the potting mix, provide more space for growth, and prevent the medium from breaking down. We recommend every year.
  3. When Roots Outgrow the Pot: If you notice the roots growing out of the pot or becoming tightly packed, it’s a sign that the orchid needs a larger container.
  4. When Potting Mix Breaks Down: Over time, the potting mix used for orchids can decompose, become compacted, or lose its ability to retain water and nutrients. Repotting allows you to replace the old medium with fresh, well-draining mix.
  5. During Active Growth: Repotting during the orchid’s active growing season, typically in spring or early summer, gives the plant the best chance to recover quickly from the disturbance.

When repotting your orchid, be sure to use a well-draining orchid potting mix and a pot with ample drainage holes. Gently remove the orchid from its current pot, trim any dead roots, and place it in the new pot with fresh medium. Avoid disturbing the roots excessively, as orchids are sensitive to root damage. After repotting, give the plant some time to adjust to its new environment, and resume regular care routines. see out blog post on Repotting.
