Graduating & Imposter Syndrome: Overcoming Self-Doubt

lkim2, May 2, 2024May 2, 2024

As I pen down these thoughts, graduation looms just around the corner, scheduled for this Saturday. Yet, amidst the excitement, a shadow of doubt hovers over me. I can’t shake off the feeling that perhaps, I don’t deserve this milestone. This sentiment stems from a deep-seated insecurity about my abilities, exacerbated by incessant comparisons with my peers.

I’ve never been the star student; my academic journey has been punctuated by setbacks, including multiple dropout attempts from college. Consequently, reaching this juncture feels surreal. However, instead of basking in the accomplishment, fear and apprehension gnaw at me. What lies ahead? Will I secure a job? Do I possess the requisite skills to stand out in a sea of equally qualified professionals? What sets me apart from the crowd?

I want to confront these feelings of imposter syndrome head-on. Instead of allowing self-doubt to overshadow my achievements, I’m choosing to adopt a proactive approach. First and foremost, I plan to remind myself of the hard work and dedication that have brought me to this moment. Each obstacle I’ve overcome and every lesson I’ve learned has contributed to my growth and prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead.

Moreover, I recognize the importance of seeking support from those around me. Whether it’s reaching out to mentors for guidance or connecting with fellow graduates who may be experiencing similar doubts, I’m committed to building a support network that will increase my confidence and provide encouragement during this transition.

I’m embracing the opportunity to define my own path forward. Instead of trying to measure up to others’ expectations, I’m focusing on setting goals that align with my values and aspirations. I believe that by staying true to myself and prioritizing personal growth, I can carve out a career path that’s both fulfilling and meaningful.

Sure, I know it won’t be easy. But then again, when has life ever been easy? Every challenge we face is an opportunity to learn and grow, and I’m ready to embrace it with open arms.

To my fellow graduates who may be grappling with similar doubts and uncertainties, I want you to know that you’re not alone. You are capable, you are deserving, and you have what it takes to succeed. So let’s take on this next chapter of our lives with courage, determination, and a fierce belief in ourselves.

Sincerely,
Lucy Kim
