Three Things I Love About Being a Web Developer

Throughout my journey of working on web development projects at Wake Tech Community College, I have really grown to love this field and what the experiences offer.

“Always code as if the person who ends up maintaining your code will be a violent psychopath who knows where you live.”

– John F. Woods

My favorite quality is that I get to work as if I am an artist: Starting with a blank canvas I generate a few ideas of what I want to build, how I want to build it, and how the expected outcome should appear. Working as a developer is really no different… I am able to take blank pages and transform them from nothing into beautiful, full-fledged designs that incorporate some of my favorite appearances, styles, or actions.

Secondly, I am always intrigued that we as developers can create websites through a variety of means whether that is from scratch with the basics (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), utilizing the ASP.Net framework, or using Content Management Software (CMS) like WordPress, Squarespace, or Joomla. I really love the flexibility that web development provides because it gives us alternate ways to create websites or applications tailored to a particular project or company.

Utilizing available plugins are essential for creating enhanced visual representations for websites.

Lastly, I am a neat-freak when it comes to organizing my household/homework and developing websites is very similar in that regard. When you are constructing a website you are strategically placing components in certain areas on the page that allows for the easiest navigation and provides immense clarity into your work. This area is where I spend most of my time when building websites because I want to ensure that any users interacting with my websites will not get lost and can easily find their way around my site. In addition, if you end up placing your components in an awkward orientation it won’t look as professional and could deter potential users/customers away from your website.

Progression through WordPress

As I progress through my web development journey I find myself loving the new techniques to create websites and one of my favorites right now is with using WordPress. I’ve begun talking about my experiences with WordPress including any considerations when selecting WordPress themes and an additional concept I’ve been understanding is how WordPress works in tandem with it’s databases.
